Grilled Pork Belly
In Korean households, there are quite a few common types of dishes that are commonly enjoyed.
I'd like to introduce a simple yet delicious dish among them.
It is a dish that is enjoyed on special occasions, as well as for breakfast.
It's the kind of food that people just eat whenever they feel like it.
It's none other than the dish called "Samgyeopsal," which involves grilling the pork belly, the same part used to make bacon.
Since it's not processed in any way, it has a rich and savory flavor.
How to Enjoy
Koreans often enjoy Samgyeopsal with kimchi on the side.
It can also be wrapped in lettuce or other leafy greens, known as "ssam."
Adding sauces like gochujang or doenjang makes it even more delicious.
In our house, we place well-grilled Samgyeopsal on top of rice and eat it with kimchi.
Koreans often cook sticky white rice in a pressure cooker for every meal.
The combination of Samgyeopsal and kimchi pairs exceptionally well with this rice.
Enjoying Samgyeopsal at Restaurants
Samgyeopsal can also be enjoyed at restaurants.
You can grill it yourself while having conversations.
It's popular in Korea to pair it with a traditional Korean liquor called soju.
Especially, there is a culture of having a meal together, known as "hwe-shik," to celebrate good news or show support at the workplace.
Samgyeopsal is a must-have item during such gatherings.
Home Cooking Method
I recently tried it myself and wrote about it.
While it's common to simply grill it, this time I tried boiling it briefly to remove excess oil.
It was effective since pork belly has a lot of fat.
Even after boiling in hot water, there was still pork oil.
I grilled kimchi with it, and it tasted really delicious.
I've provided detailed photos and information, so you can refer to the link for more.
